Opinion: Fulham not out of the woods yet despite impressive first win of the campaign

|

Let’s not get anything twisted or confused just yet.

Yes, last night was a very good result, something that lifts us out of the relegation zone if only for one week. But let’s get one thing straight, this was against a fellow side that is also struggling this season, and a side that some believe could finish bottom of the division this season.

There’s a reason that we are down near the bottom of the table right now, that’s because we have shown against the teams that are likely to be in the conversation to finish in the top half of the table that we just aren’t up to it yet. No coincidence that our only other point came against Sheffield United, another team that are down the bottom of the table.

And let’s be honest, there were a couple of moments last night that probably had you feeling just a little bit nervous. Conor Townsend’s looping cross/shot hitting the crossbar and Karlan Grant being put through after the mistake by Andre Anguissa.

Will we stay up?

Yes

No

Yes, we did some things right last night, like sacrificing possession (only 46%) in favour of counter-attacking play to create chances (13 shots, 6 on target) , but one good result isn’t going to suddenly convince me that everything is finally OK at Craven Cottage.

So let’s not pretend that we are out of the woods just yet. This could very well be a bit of a false dawn, remember how things started looking like they had ‘clicked’ when we beat Burnley back in 2018/19? Only for us to then only win two games between then and the end of January?

Let’s wait to see if one good result and performance can become two, and two become three before we start saying that everything is looking positive.
