There`s no doubt that the pressure on Premiership managers has increased greatly in recent years.
The desire, no necessity, to survive in the Premiership has probably taken years off of lives and also affected many a marriage.
Last year Fulham escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth. Several pundits will no doubt suggest we owe our survival to Liverpool, seeing as they fielded a weakened team when they came to Craven Cottage.
However, the plethora of signings, seven as I type, has given us all new hope for next season, hope that it will be such a turgid time, hope that there will be more good days than bad days and a hope that we may spring a surprise, or two, in the cup competitions, perhaps even sneak a EUFA Cup lace (courtesy of the Intertoto).
With so much at stake, it`s no surprise that chairman are keen to seek reassurance from their managers, especially in the case of Lawrie Sanchez who has spent a small fortune trying to get our club away from the turmoil we suffered last season.
Speaking to the media, Sanchez had the following to say about Premiership survival,
“I’ve promised the chairman we’ll do better than last season. We avoided relegation by one place and point last year’
‘We don’t want to be a club fighting against relegation every season and I have to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
‘The new television deal is in place and the decision from the top was that we don’t want to be in the situation where relegation is an issue again.”
‘If we’re going to stay in the Premiership and get £30million or more each year because we’re in the top flight, then we must not go down.”
Now lets hope those words can be translated into success on the pitch, after all we`ve waited long enough haven`t we?
