Fulham v Charlton Preview

Fulham entertain Charlton Athletic this Saturday in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

It promises to be a thrilling encounter with David and Goliath connotations pitching the side that is leading League One against a more fancied Premier League side.

Having already exited the Carling Cup whilst also crashing out of the Europa League, and with the Premier League title not our forte, the FA Cup is, realistically, the only trophy we can win this season.

But, having already played in excess of 35 games this season, one might question whether chasing an FA Cup dream might prove a hurdle too far as finishing well clear of relegation in the Premier League is our primary concern.

The tie, as well as providing a bit of London spice, is the ideal opportunity for Martin Jol to give some of our fringe players a run-out. We`d fully expect to see the likes of Briggs, Gecov, Kasami, Frei and Sa in the starting eleven.

As for injuries, the word is that Andrew Johnson still isn`t fit, Mark Schwarzer is still on the road to recovery and as we all know, Grygera is out for the season.

For our visitors, Ben Hamer is suspended so John Sullivan will be between the sticks.

As you would expect, our path shave crossed before in the world`s greatest domestic cup competition.

Apparently we`ve met on five occasions before with Charlton going through three times and Fulham twice. The last time we met was at the same stage back in January 2003 and we emerged 3-0 victors.

Could this be our year? Could Fulham make a march on Wembley?
