So, next up is our American winger Clint Dempsey, naturally right footed, but placed on the left to fill a rather large void that has been left there.

Bought in the January window of 2006, the versatile player has played major, yet underrated roles in our recent successes, and battles. At his previous club, New England Revolution, the feisty midfielder had won MLS player of the season for the year 2006, and was quickly snapped up.

However, many thought he was quite an average signing; technically gifted, but yet he couldn’t produce it on the pitch within his first season. It wasn’t long though, before he was a fans favourite after a fantastic season in 2007-08, in which he aided our relegation fight with 6 goals.

Despite the good form, storm clouds were on the horizon as Zoltan Gera was brought into the side, taking the American’s position in the starting line-up. Dempsey didn’t pull any punches and made it clear he wanted first team football, and aren’t we glad he was given it?

This season has been a tremendous success for Clint, who has adapted to Premier League life very well, and banged in a few crucial goals in the process. ‘The Deuce’ has improved his game dramatically over the years, and proven his ability to find the net, as well as bringing out a tougher more competitive side of him.

His versatility should be commented upon as well. Hodgson has pushed Dempsey wide left, despite his preferred foot being his right, and if needed, he can be placed up front, on the right, or even in the middle of the park, and yet, he can pull top-drawer performances out of the bag.

Credit goes to Clint Dempsey for proving his worth to our side, and not giving up. He deserves a lot of respect for doing so, and he is a great asset to the club!
