An Epilogue for Anfield!

Some three days down the line, it`s time to have a final reflection on what happened in the fixture against Liverpool.

In reality, we were within ten minutes of snatching a point, just ten minutes away from probably pulling off a shock.

Unfortunately, it was not to be and Liverpool used their vast squad to great effect bringing on three substitutes to change things around, a point made by Lawrie Sanchez when reflecting on how Fulham had stifled the opposition in his traditional post match interview,

“You don`t bring on three subs unless things are working and that`s what they did.”

Beforehand we`d waxed lyrical about our fears of taking a Besiktas style hammering, thankfully it didn`t turn out that way although any thoughts of a win were perhaps, in the circumstances, pipe-dreams. We fall into the us and them trap, the big guys always beat the small guys scenario, another point made by Sanchez,

“Coming to places like Liverpool is very difficult for clubs our size because it is a massive club with a huge amount of talent on the bench. They are a long, long way from where we are at the moment; so we had to fight extra hard to stay in the game.”

Unfortunately, playing a containing game against the likes of Liverpool is always a risky business. If they score early there is time to adapt, time to adopt another plan but when they score so late, you leave yourselves exposed and unable to respond and that is, in conclusion, basically what happened.

Another time perhaps!
