A Love Letter From John Carew

Aside from every Fulham fan, Roy Hodgson, and Mr. and Mrs. Hangeland (of course), there seems to be no bigger fan of our supremely talented central defender, Brede Hangeland, than his Norwegian countryman and player he will most likely be marking this weekend, John Carew.

SkySports reports that Carew has urged his boss, Martin O`Neill, to bring Hangeland to Villa Park this summer as an ideal replacement for injured captain Martin Laursen, whose career is in doubt after a serious knee injury.

‘He is a great defender who could fit into any team. If he was to come here it would be positive for the club.’

‘Hangeland has been in the top three or four defenders in the league this season. He is the complete defender.’

‘He has that strength being so big, he is good in the air, he has good speed, he is one of the best defenders in the league on the ball.’

‘He has a calmness about him in possession that you almost never see in a defender. He is never stressed, he brings calm to the team.’

(In my best Scarlett O`Hara, southern accent – “Oh, John – how you do make
speeches.”)

The list of Hangeland`s admirers seems to grow with every match – Liverpool and Arsenal among them – and it seems increasingly unlikely that we`ll be able to hang onto our most reliable player. However, I`ve come to accept that we will likely lose him this summer, and actually, I`m counting on the cash that would be generated to finance Roy`s plans for making us even better next season.
