If you`re a Fulham fan it`s been a boring weekend! We`ve just been sat around waiting for the trip to Old Trafford on Monday night thanks to the television companies.
I doubt whether I`ve had such a frustrating weekend for years.
Nevertheless, Lawrie Sanchez has found time out to enlighten us all with a few more of his thoughts on the modern game as he gave the standard press conference ahead of the clash at Old Trafford.
In it, Lawrie gave us an insight into what, he believes, are the rudimental requirements of being a footballer. Now we here at Vital Fulham are not being confrontational but we don`t wholeheartedly agree with some of what Lawrie has been saying.
Amongst the quotes are the following,
“Football is now so money orientated. It was not invented for that – it was invented for winning.”
“I keep saying to my players that they will be fine when they finish playing but they`ll look back and as – what did I win?”
“They will have a nice house and a nice standard of living but when their sons ask them what they did, they might only be able to say – I played football.”
“And when they are asked what they won, they might only be able to say they won nothing but have earned a lot of money.”
With regard to the first quote we kind of agree. However, in a changing world, thing shave changed, society has become greedy, society has become money orientated not just football. As for winning, successive governments took great delight in drumming that philosophy out of our schools, deeming that losing was harming our children and that it should be the taking part that matters.
The second quote is more controversial. Is a career in football only about trophies? I`d suggest not! Society leaks money, to be financially stable is one of life`s great quests. If you doubt my words then ask yourselves why so many player`s from other eras are having to sell off their medals?
As for the third quote, I wouldn`t consider it o be to bad a line, sitting your son down on your knee and recalling those exciting days, a bit better than sitting him down with pictures of what you won and recalling how you had to sell your medals off to pay to survive!
And finally, the fourth, I know which I`d prefer – money, more money and the chance to give your children the start in life that money brings or am I just barking up the wrong branch in life?
It`s not often we here at Vital Fulham pick on Lawrie and we realise his spiel was a lot longer but on a dreary Sunday morning I thought I`d be a little churlish and air a few of my own opinions!
