With work piling up, I have found it hard to find the time to continue my articles on our starting 11.
Gladly, though, a window has opened up and I will spend it wisely, informing you guys on how I feel about our Welsh winger, Simon Davies.
By the time January 2006 had come round, Simon’s career seemed to have taken a somewhat downward spiral. Touted as the next big thing in his early years at Spurs, but then shifted onto Everton’s backs not long afterwards. It didn’t get any better or Davies though as he failed to impress at Goodison, and was deemed surplus to requirements. That’s when things finally turned out quite well for our winger, with his move to the Thames completed.
As I reach a mid-point in my team analysis, I am finding ‘unsung hero’ to be quite a common phrase, and, unfortunately, it looks as though I may be forced to use it once again. It is fair for me to say that it is not particularly regular for our former Peterborough right midfielder to be singled out for praise. You don’t hear Roy throwing superlatives at him, and you certainly don’t hear the media hailing his role in the team. Yet, I see him as one of the most consistent and hard working members of our side. Still though, not a whisper of positive accolade is heard about the lad.
Technically, he is a good player, not the best, but good. He offers a pin-point cross, a fair bit of pace and a little bit of flair when it is duly needed. Mentally, he is a superb player. Always up for the ball, always running, looking for space. He carries with him a work rate that you rarely find in wingers now-a-days. Davies is one of a dying breed.
However, the same positive comments, could also reflect negatively on him. Is there a reason why the likes of Man Utd and Arsenal have flairy nippets on the wing, whilst we stick with a good old fashioned ‘hard grafter’? Of course there is! And, that, ladies and gentlemen, leads to another question which must be answered.
Should we stick with Davies, or bring in someone new?
