Alain Goma has been released by Fulham after 5 years at the club.

The 33-year-old Frenchman joined the club in March 2001 for a then club-record fee of £4 million.

He played an integral part in Fulham’s promotion to the Premiership and firmly established himself in the Fulham backline with his commanding presence, strength and tenacity.

He soon became a fan’s favourite, being hailed as ‘The Rock’, but his lack of time on the pitch has meant only a few appearances this season and after not being able to agree a new contract, he has been released by the club.

Goma was only quoted in December as saying that he hoped a new contract could be sorted out: ‘I would definitely like to stay at Fulham and try and get another year’s contract’, he told Skysports.com.

But after such an injury plagued season, and with manager Chris Coleman wanting to bring in new blood, it was decided that Goma was surplus to requirements.
