I`m not sure if any of us on the Vital Fulham editorial team dared to believe that Holland would have qualified with a game remaining in Group C!
The group, cruelly labelled the ‘Group of Death`, was to; if the critics were to be believed, provide France and Italy as quarter-finalists. Instead, it is Marco Van Basten and his squad who can quite rightly be pleased with themselves leaving Italy, France and Romania to scrap it out for the remaining place.
Therefore, for Holland`s last fixture in the group, against Romania, Marco Van Basten will quite rightly rest key players. In doing so though, he`s put a new slant on things by remarking,
“We don`t talk about an ‘A` team and a ‘B` team, we have 23 full internationals.”
Cute but very true and if the others complain then tough.
Indeed, our ex-keeper, Edwin Van der Sar, has also commented on matters, remarking,
“It is only logical that some players will want to get some rest.”
I get the feeling, it`s good to be Dutch at the moment!
