“That’s the gamble”: Former Fulham player Mark Schwarzer sends major warning to the club after bad start

|

I don’t think that I can quite sum it up better than the initial headline.

It was a pretty brutal summation of just how bad things are so far at Fulham to start the season, but at the same time it was an honest one. Speaking to OptusSport in Australia, former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer did his best to try and put into words how badly the Whites have performed to start the season, losing both games and shipping seven goals in the process.

And in doing so, he called upon the board to make sure that head coach Scott Parker is given the funds that he needs in order to make it happen, although he did urge them to show some restraint compared to the last time we were in the top flight:

“(They’re gone) unless the Fulham owners decide they need to go out on a bit of a limb, not as extreme as they did last time, but they have to go out and spend another 30 or 40 million on three or four players. I think if they do it right, they give themselves a chance.

“That’s the gamble. If they go and spend an initial 30, 40 or 50 million pounds (A$89m) it only gives them a better chance, it doesn’t give them any guarantees. I think Fulham are at least six or seven players short.”

If we could only sign one this summer, what should it be?

I couldn’t have put it better myself.

I said yesterday that the failure and success this season will fall predominantly on the likes of Tony Khan and his recruitment of players, and at the moment it just isn’t good enough for us. We’ve seen some progress in terms of signing a centre-back as we chase Marlon, but as I said, he’s not the answer to our problems.

We need to go out on a limb and go after players that will actually make a difference, even if that means spending possibly more than we would ideally like, for instance Jonathan Tah.

Otherwise Schwarzer’s prediction, like other people’s, will have an ever-increasing chance of becoming true.

What about you? What do you make of Schwarzer’s comments?
