If you are to avoid relegation the mythical points total to aim for has always been forty points.

Indeed, many a struggler and indeed a few more fancied teams have always celebrated once the forty point mark has been achieved.

Therefore, with us some way adrift of forty points, it`s pleasing to hear, quite realistically, that forty points may be in excess of what is needed this season.

Here`s what Roy Hodgson had to say on the matter ahead of our eagerly anticipated clash with Manchester United,

“If the top teams keep disposing of the bottom teams then the points total will be lower.”

“But I don`t like thinking of it in those terms, I like to concentrate on the game ahead and make certain that I as a coach, and the players as players, are ready for that game.”

Let`s hope they well and truly ready for Sir Alex Ferguson and his team of stars!

  • Sweet lord, I’ve been saying this (that the stay-up points target will be far less than 40) for AGES! Glad Roy’s finally picked up on it – I always wondered if he ever perused these fine forums. Having said that, after today’s results (Reading + Birmingham both winning, Fulham losing) it will take a bloody miracle for us to stay up. Arse.
