Those words of caution I wrote relating to how Hillsborough wasn`t the cushy tie I first anticipated it might be obviously didn`t reach the players last night.

Driving back down the M1, in the early hours of the morning, I had plenty of time to ponder over a night whereby those who pulled on our shirt not only let down themselves but the small band of loyal supporters who spent their hard-earned cash on chasing the Wembley dream.

It I were to be perfectly honest, I`d class it as a waste of money and expect an apology from a side that never really got going until late on in the game and seemed to be going through the actions until the realization that a cup shock was on the cards, following the successful conversation of the 50th minute spot kick, by Madine after Stephen Kelly had needlessly conceded the spot-kick.

Sure we had a header, from Brede Hangeland, disallowed after he`d converted a free kick but it would have been a travesty if we had gone on to salvage something from a game we were never really in.

Afterwards, Martin Jol more or less echoed my very sentiments when he remarked to waiting reporters keen to gather a few words on one of the shocks of the round,

“It`s bitterly disappointing because we just didn`t get going – and did not seem capable of causing them any problems at all.”

“Sure, we missed our creative departments and, of course, Dembele wasn`t out there either.”

“But we were still playing a Sheffield Wednesday team who had made five or six changes from Saturday.”

“Despite bringing in so many new players, they fully deserved their win.”

“The only strange thing was when Brede Hangeland headed home a free-kick in the second half but the goal was disallowed for offside.”

“I`ll have to have a look at it again to see if the decision was right but it will not take away from the disappointment of our performance.”

I wouldn`t bother Martin, it`s not going to change anything and our realistic chances of landing a very rare trophy now rest solely on the FA Cup, but after last night I wouldn`t stick any hard cash on us making Wembley this season!
