Report: Fulham taking interest in Serie A defender, but he’s not the answer to their problems

|

Is it progress? By default, yes it is.

Is it enough progress that makes me think that he’s going to be our knight in shining armour that’s going to show up and solve all of our problems? No, not really.

So following on from Saturday’s roller-coaster of emotions that was the game against Leeds United, it appears as though there’s going to be some action taken from the club in trying to bring in a new centre-back, although if you ask me it’s a couple of weeks too late because I, and a lot of other Fulham fans, could have pointed out for a while now just how much we needed a new one.

Anyway, according to some reports over the weekend, Fulham are interested in bringing Sassuolo central defender Marlon to the club in order to solve our problems when it comes to conceding goals, and on the face of it, I don’t think he’s going to be the answer.

Now I’ll admit I don’t watch Serie A, so don’t have a full concept of what he’s like, but some quick research doesn’t fill me with much hope.

Is a new CB our priority this window?

Yes

No

For starters, he was part of a defence that conceded 63 goals last season in Serie A, I don’t know how many of them were down to him, but those aren’t exactly the numbers you want to be looking at when you’re looking to buy a new defender.

Secondly, taking a look at his WhoScored profile, he appears to be another ball-playing central defender akin to Tim Ream as opposed to a dominant physical central defender along the likes of, for the sake of argument, Brede Hangeland.

And a guy like that just isn’t going to solve our problems right now. We need someone who is going to be preventing other team’s attacks rather than focusing on starting our own attacks. Perhaps not to the levels or cost of someone like Jonathan Tah, but someone of that ilk.

What about you? What do you make of this news?
