Report: Fulham plotting audacious move for prolific Championship forward to be expensive bench-warmer

|

Talk about putting the cherry on the cake.

Not only would they have been denied promotion, but we would have been the ones to do it, and they lose one of their best players (apparently the best in the division), to us as well. There’s rubbing it in, and then there’s this.

According to a report from Lyall Thomas at Sky Sports, Fulham are ‘in talks’ with our dear friends from down the M4 to bring Ollie Watkins to Craven Cottage this summer. There’s no denying that he’s a tidy little player (a rare thing to say about someone from that club), contributing 28 goals and assists in the division last year.

However, whilst he might be a good player, he would be coming in to be a backup, and I don’t think that can be stressed enough, because unless Aleksandar Mitrovic (the man who beat him out for the golden boot) sustains a serious injury in the first few weeks of the season and is rules out for a while, he’s not going to be starting many games.

And with Brentford valuing him at £25m, that’s an awful lot to spend on someone just to sit on the bench for about 75% of the season.

Would you spend £25m for Ollie Watkins this summer?

Yes

No

Whilst it’s true we need a backup for Mitrovic, even though we did do incredibly well without him last campaign, the Premier League is going to be a whole different kettle of fish, and Bobby Decordova-Reid doesn’t strike me as someone who can lead the line against Premier League defences on a regular basis if we are without Mitrovic for a while.

He’ll be the right fit for someone, he’s just not the right fit for us.
