Report: £20m Fulham man could be on his way out the door, but the club shouldn’t rush departure

|

It’s a move that I wouldn’t totally be against, but I feel like we need to make sure there’s a replacement plan in place first.

According to a report from Football Insider, Watford have opened talks with us over a move to take Alfie Mawson to Vicarage Road. The 26-year-old was one of our big-money signings in the summer of 2018, costing us in the region of £20m to bring him from recently relegated Swansea City, and to say he’s been a let-down would be a bit of an understatement.

A regular in the team that conceded so many goals in the Premier League the first time around before getting injured in one of the more bizarre stories you’re likely to hear, followed by an OK run in the first-team in the Championship but certainly nothing to make you think he’d set the world on fire (especially after his display against Luton Town), before another injury ruled him out of the latter part of the latest campaign.

Should we sell Alfie Mawson this summer?

Yes

No

What I’m saying is, if the club want to sell him, then that’s totally fine with me.

But at the same time, we had better have someone lined up to take his place, because as it stands, our quality when it comes to the centre-back department leaves a lot to be desired, with many of the faces still there from our disastrous 2018/19 campaign. We’ve got Michael Hector in as an upgrade, but the rest of them are severely lacking in Premier League quality.

And whilst I’d be OK if we sold him, and we got a decent price for him as well to make up for some of that £20m we got him for, I’d much rather us hold onto him and have him alongside Hector than the likes of Tim Ream or Denis Odoi.

Long story short, get his replacement in first, and then sell him.
