Opinion: Fulham’s latest target is a sign they still aren’t learning their lessons from last time

|

If he was a few years older, or a few years younger, this would make perfect sense.

If he was either a prospect for the future, or as an established veteran. But right now, it could very well cause a few problems within the ranks, and we’re once again in danger of repeating the same mistakes that we made last time.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Fulham are preparing to make a bid for Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The 28-year-old has predominantly been a backup for the North London side, but enjoyed a much more fruitful season in 2019/20, as he racked up 25 appearances in all competitions for them.

And having enjoyed that time, I don’t think he’ll want to come here (a step down in terms of club size) in order to be a backup again, he’ll want to be first-choice, and doing so would be incredibly harsh on Marek Rodak, who after his displays last season has pretty much earned the right to hold onto that spot going into next season.

Should we be looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer?

Yes

No

I know I sound like a broken record here, but I do feel that it’s a point that needs repeating, and that’s that the majority of players we bring in this summer should be backups, with the possible exception of a centre-back to partner Michael Hector.

But that’s just one change in a team of eleven, that much we should be able to handle.

If you take a look at the number of changes last time around you can see where I am coming from, seven changes to the starting eleven at the playoff final compared to the opening day of the season against Crystal Palace.

Cyrus Christie pointed out in an interview just how much the turnover of players affected things within the club, so we are treading a very fine line with whoever comes in, we need to be looking to add to the starting eleven rather than simply swapping them.

I suspect that Goalkeeper is not the most pressing position to fill
because Rodak is as good as most who are available or better.
