Opinion: Fulham have got their priorities totally wrong as they look set to complete first deal

|

I’m not saying that this is a bad deal, I just think what’s going on around it doesn’t quite add up in my eyes.

Recent reports claim that Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson’s move to Craven Cottage is getting closer to being completed, with the 23-year-old set to undergo a medical at Motspur Park, with a source close to Vital Fulham claiming that the left-back is Scott Parker’s number one target this summer.

Whilst I have said that I find the wages supposedly being offered somewhat baffling and potentially dangerous, I’m not totally against the move. It will offer some competition and quality in terms of depth at left-back that the likes of Maxime Le Marchand and Denis Odoi haven’t properly been able to provide in recent seasons, and for an initial fee of £1.5m the club are sticking to their word that they won’t be going crazy like we did last time we were relegated.

However, if Robinson is Parker’s ‘top target’, then something just doesn’t seem right.

Whilst depth is needed at left-back, I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s the top priority. Signing Harrison Reed would be top of my list, then a new left-sided centre-back to replace the aging Tim Ream, a proper Premier League quality forward that can back up Aleksander Mitrovic are arguably much more important to us staying up and competing than a backup left-back.

How much will Fulham spend this winter?

Less than £10m

More than £10m

This to me shows that Parker and Tony Khan might not have their priorities in order, and that’s worrying going into as crucial and as potentially chaotic a season as this as I explained in my piece on Reed.

This summer is arguably going to be the most intricate and delicate transfer window that we’re going to deal with in some time, and we have to make sure every single transfer is spot on. And mixing up our priorities isn’t the best way to go about it.
