Opinion: Fulham are in a situation of ‘too many chefs spoiling the broth’ in one position

|

Solve one problem, and then move onto the next one.

That should hopefully be the mantra that Fulham take on when it comes to the January transfer window.

I wrote this morning about how the club needs to make the centre-forward position our number one priority in the transfer window, but when we get that position sorted, where else do we need to be looking?

I was struck by this article from Cottage Analytica where they pointed out we have a different problem on our hands, and that is out on the right-wing. Now there are a lot of numbers involved as it breaks down the club’s various options at the spot and I wouldn’t dare try to break it down simply, so I urge you to read it for yourself.

But coming away from it, it seems clear that there is no obvious answer as to who should be the club’s starting winger, with the players we have at our disposal both offering up their own strengths and weaknesses. Very much the opposite of a Swiss Army knife, instead of one person who can do multiple things, we’ve got a whole bunch who each bring their own skills to the table.

Do we need a new right-winger this January window?

Yes

No

And I personally think it might be time for us to try and consolidate that into one player, rather than go through a rotating cast of characters out on the right-hand side (because Ademola Lookman has been our best player this year, so his spot on the left wing is pretty much secure). Loan out or sell the likes of Bobby Decordova-Reid, Neeskens Kebano and Aboubakar Kamara and let us have that one player that can do it all out wide.

That way we can get some consistency in the side rather than having to chop and change on a weekly basis.

Let’s just hope we aren’t too far adrift when the time comes, otherwise that might narrow our options of players who might be willing to join.

What about you? Do you think we need to bring in a new right-winger in the January window?
