Opinion: Club putting heart before head as they allow veteran midfielder to depart on free transfer

|

We knew that this was coming, however, I don’t think that we quite saw it happening quite like this.

And I’m not quite sure what to make of it all. Some of it makes sense, but overall it just seems like a bit of a missed opportunity.

According to Sky Sports News’ Transfer Centre (21/9/20, 13:02), Fulham are allowing midfielder Kevin McDonald to leave the club on a free transfer this window. It goes on to state that “It’s understood the west London club have valued his contribution and don’t want to prevent him playing elsewhere.”

So in a sense, we’re not going to hold him back from wherever it is that he wants to go and play on a regular basis, which is somewhat the ‘honourable’ thing to do. Just a kind gesture that is a way of thanking him for his service by not putting up too much of a barrier in terms of his next move as he’s now basically allowed to go anywhere.

Should the club loan StefJo and KMac?

Yes

No

But with that issue of sentimentality comes a little bit of an issue regarding business that I’m not comfortable with. We know that clubs are going to be hit financially this year without fans in stadiums, something that looks like it could do on for some time, we’re going to need every penny that we can get at this stage, even if it is small change compared to what we get just for being in this division.

And whilst I don’t want to hamper McDonald’s move either, I made it clear when the news first came out just how big a fan of his I am so I don’t begrudge him a move, but whilst we’re doing what’s in the best interest for him, are we doing what’s in the best interest for the club?

What about you? What do you make of this news regarding McDonald?
