Mark Schwarzer, as he told Football+ magazine, has no intention of ‘winding-down’ his career back in his homeland of Australia.
He has seen some of his fellow Aussies go home to finish their careers in the A-League, and this has not worked out, with some even being turned on by fans.
This is not something that he will subject himself to: ‘I have seen too many players go back home and it has not worked out.
‘The biggest example is John Aloisi, and how he was treated so badly by people. You are up there to be shot down very, very quickly. I don’t want to give anyone the opportunity to do that to me.’
Schwarzer admits, as it would be, that ending his career in the A-League would be a ‘step down’ and this is not something that he wants – he wants to end his career in Europe, and preferably the premier league…
He may well be turning 39 shortly although the keeper has no intention of calling it a day anytime soon and intends to play on for at least another 3-years.
It is in fact his intention of going to the 2014 world cup with Australia: ‘there’s no easing up, no way, forget about it. I’m sticking around for a while yet. What motivates me is the 2014 World Cup. I want to play in it – that’s my dream.
‘I will be 41, so I think I can make it happen. I am fully determined to keep playing and get there. All the conversations I have had with the national coach so far indicate he wants me fully involved and to continue to play.’
Few would bet against Schwarzer still being around at that time, although him being around and still playing for Fulham would be open for debate…
