This wasn’t the way Marcus Bettinelli, or anyone at Fulham, wanted the ‘keeper to celebrate his new deal was it!

Injury, quite literally, was added to insult when the Whites were beaten 2-1 at Hull on Wednesday but this was made even worse when Bettinelli’s knee injury was sustained in a collision with his own teammate Matt Smith.

Kit Symons have given an update on both telling BBC London 94.9 that Smith is ‘less severe’ but even he is facing a month to six-weeks out!

Bettinelli came off worse and is ‘more serious,’ he said.

‘Matt’s is less severe so we are probably looking at four to six weeks.

‘Marcus’ is more serious and he has damaged another ligament. We’re just waiting on specialist advice.’

With Smith out for us to six-weeks that means both, of course, will miss Huddersfield tomorrow for starters and this will see Andy Lonergan come in for his Whites chance.

Symons added he was ‘delighted’ with the former Bolton ‘keeper but is looking, depending on how serious the injury is to the England U21 international, to bring in another option too.

‘I’m delighted with Andy Lonergan but we may well be looking to strengthen in that department.’

All we can now do is keep our fingers crossed!
