With Rene Meulensteen having joined the club as Martin Jol`s new assistant, it`ll be interesting to see how quick the duo can orchestrate a turnaround in our fortunes.

Forty-nine year old Meulensteen arrives with a wealth of experience having spent spell at Manchester united, Brondby and Anzhi Makhachkala.

However, it appears that Rene can be a bit of an odd-ball if you believe what one of his former players at Brondby, Pier Nielsen, has to say in his autobiography.

Apparently, on the cusp of taking on Frankfurt in a UEFA tie, Meulensteen issued an order that puzzled the Brondby team, or as Nielsen puts it,

“Before a UEFA Cup match against Frankfurt he started making players tell him what animal they wanted to be on the field.”

“No one answered at first so I said I wanted to be a snake.”

“He told me ‘No Per, that won`t work, snakes are slow animals. We cannot have snakes in our defence because the Germans will out run us.”

“So I said I would be a tiger. Meulensteen replied, ‘That`s perfect! Tigers are brave, fast and strong. That is exactly what we need.”

“The other players responded and Meilensteen drew the starting line-up with a tiger, a fox and an elephant, a giraffe and other animals.”

“All I could think was we are sending an entire zoo on the pitch today. And we went on and lost 4-0.”

I wonder if, after his time in the north-west alongside Sir Alex Ferguson he`s mellowed at all!
