Making up for lost time

Back in May 2007, aged just a little over 16-years-old, Matthew Briggs was destined for stardom. Fast-forward to the present day after almost 3-years out of the Fulham 1st team fold Briggs is back in the picture!

For Briggs to say that things ‘haven’t gone as I thought’ would be considered an understatement, although that – as he told the official website – is exactly how he feels.

He might have been around the 1st team but he has said that he did not feel a part of it: ‘its true things probably haven’t gone as I thought they would.

‘There were times when I didn’t really feel part of things.

‘Although I was in and around the senior squad, it’s not until you get a regular run of games that you fully understand what it is like.’

Now 20-years-old, and a few years wiser, Briggs has said that he does ‘feel part of the set-up’ again, not that he let his head drop at any stage.

Briggs now wants to take his talent and fulfil his potential: ‘but I do feel part of the set-up now. I feel like a professional footballer.

‘It has been frustrating. I could have let my head drop but the moment you allow that to happen is the moment your dream can slip away.

‘I’m 20 years of age now and although that is still young, I’ve been training with the first team for a while. I like to think that I have the talent and now it’s up to me to turn my potential into the real thing.’

Injuries cannot be helped, or avoided at times, and these have not helped Briggs, nor have further player arrivals and changes in management.

Under Martin Jol he has come back into the equation, although it is down to him to now keep himself in it when the chances come along…
