Yesterday we pointed out how Bryan Ruiz wasn`t able to play in the Europa League tie against his former club FC Twente.

It was later established that he wouldn`t be eligible until the group stages were over.

Martin Jol, ahead of our Group K fixture with Twente, has shed further light on the subject by pointing out that Ruiz wasn`t aware of that little fact when he was negotiating to sign for Fulham, commenting to the media ahead of the tie tonight,

“He thought he could play but he couldn`t. It was an advantage for us because if he`d known it could have been a problem.”

“I knew it but he thought he could play. Just after signing he said, ‘I thought I could play` – I said, ‘No you can`t!”

Continuing, Martin echoed our thoughts, further adding,

“I don`t agree with this rule. He was pretty disgusted as well.”

“Maybe if they were playing in the same competition okay, but this is a different competition.”

And as for a likely indication of his starting eleven at Craven Cottage tonight, Jol commented,

“To play in the Europa you have to play league games on Sunday and that is tough. That is why we will change a few positions to keep players fitter for Sunday.”

It could prove to be an interesting night!
