Hughes Irish Woe

Yesterday, in the absence of some decent domestic football news relating to our club, we ran an article on how our more than capable defender, Aaron Hughes, was hoping the Northern Ireland side could sneak a win in Estonia.

We mentioned how the Irish hopes of qualifying for the finals of Euro 2012 were hanging by a thread with the side needing to get nine points out of the nine available to even stand a chance of finishing second in their group.

We also covered how Hughes believed that if the Irish could keep it tight then there may be a good case to go gung-ho in the latter stages to try and snatch a win.

Sadly, that wasn`t to be the case!

Northern Ireland slumped to a heavy 4-1 defeat in Estonia, a defeat that ends their slim chances of qualification. Following the defeat a dejected Hughes reflected on a chance gone, commenting,

“We created a few chances but kept giving the ball away.”

Surely a cardinal sin at this level of the game!
