Hangeland on Europa League Qualification

If we are to be pitched into the Europa League, via the Fair Play League, Brede Hangeland has this theory that we should be better rewarded than have to commence battle in the first round on June 30th.

Our Norwegian centre-back who netted two fine goals at St Andrews, on Saturday, is critical of the fact, just like Mark Hughes, of the way the pre-season is severely truncated, even more so when some of the players, like Brede, report for international duty once the domestic season finishes.

This is what Brede had to say,

“It is bad if you get that Europa League spot because you have to start playing games too early.”

“If it`s regarded as a prize, you need to get into the first-round proper or the group stages.”

“You can`t ask teams to play in the middle of the summer, or at a time when the players should really be on the beach resting. We`re stretching it a bit too far.”

I guess one solution, although it might not meet with everybody`s approval, is to allow our youngsters to carry the torch in those first few matches and if we crash out, so be it!
