Fulham’s Automatic Promotion Hopes Increase After Cardiff Defeat

Last night, Fulham’s dreams of attaining automatic promotion from the Championship to the Premier League received a boost.

Although Cardiff City still remain the favourites to grab that second automatic promotion place, alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Welsh side are certainly making heavy weather of it.

Travelling to the Midlands, to take on Derby County, Cardiff City knew a win would move them four points clear of Fulham, with just two games left.

But, despite taking the lead, Cardiff were to slip to a 3-1 defeat.

That defeat leaves Cardiff just a solitary point ahead of Fulham, with Cardiff having 86 points, compared to the 85 points Fulham have, with just two games left.

Looking at the fixture lists, Cardiff have to navigate the following two fixtures:

• Hull City (a)

and

• Reading (h)

Knowing if they win both then they will pip Fulham to the second automatic promotion place.

Fulham, on the other hand, have the following two fixtures to navigate:

• Sunderland (h)

and

• Birmingham (a)

But Fulham have the advantage of playing the first of those fixtures this Friday. If the Cottagers can beat a Sunderland side who have already been relegated, then the pressure will be on Cardiff to travel to Humberside to get a win against Hull City.

This second automatic promotion place race looks like it is going right to the wire, but is it a race Fulham can win?
