Fulham – Thursday! It Could Have Been Us.

Looking through the television schedules for this week, something caught my eye!

Nestling amongst the schedules there is a dramatic overkill of UEFA Cup coverage this Thursday with three games being broadcast, one after the other.

To accommodate this blanket coverage, Portsmouth supporters are having to turn up at a ridiculous hour to cheer their side on in their first ever European tie.

I’d guess they’re not too happy about this.

But, I’m not happy about the UEFA Cup at all.

It still rankles, especially after our good start, that Manchester City received the ‘Fair Play’ place through a scoring method that, in my opinion, was always going to favour, on paper, the bigger club.

At the time, we here on Vital Fulham, gave the selection of Manchester City adequate coverage.

We didn’t backstab, we didn’t throw our toys out of the pram, we just accepted that we thought it had come a touch too soon for our side, especially on the back of the ‘Great Escape’ we had to pull off to stay in the Premier League.

Now I’m not so sure!

The astute spending carried out by Roy Hodgson, in my opinion, means we’re adequately equipped to enter such a competition. We might not win it but I’m sure the experience of winning the early rounds would serve us well.

Therefore, is it too late to ask UEFA to reconsider how they scored the ‘Fair Play’ league last season?

I’ve changed my mind – I want UEFA Cup football now!
