With Brede Hangeland not quite ready to resume first tea duties against Swindon Town, it was left to our young central defender, Chris Smalling to deputise.

As usual, young Chris went about his task in an immaculate manner and it seems as if Roy Hodgson has unearthed a real diamond.

Chris, speaking about his recent run, had this to say,

“It has been a meteoric rise. I was unfortunate at Millwall but settled in at Maidstone and then got my chance here. I have really enjoyed the games and when you have a manager of the calibre of Roy Hodgson showing faith in you, it is a big help.”

“Seeing as I`ve had a second chance, I am really enjoying my time and, hopefully, there is more to come.”

The way things are progressing Chris, we`d say you`ve got a golden future in the game.

  • Brilliant youngster who already has a sound understanding of the game. And with Hughes and Brede to learn off, what could go wrong? (Not to tempt fate)

  • he really has blossomed into the center back coverage that i was dying for in the summer transfer window…

  • It’s good to have strong backup in the form of youngsters. Keeps the club on a solid base and gives a continuous flow of good kids who are likely to get playing time.

  • with Brede suffering a recurrence of his knee problem it looks like Chris will get some more games under his belt!
