After watching Clint Dempsey stifle the hopes of a nation with his long range effort last night, now it`s the turn of our goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer to take to the World Cup stage.

Schwarzer, hoping a catastrophe doesn`t befall him like it did poor old Robert Green last night, will be between the posts as Australia take on Germany tonight.

For Australia it is their third appearance in the finals and Schwarzer has spoken about how his nation are looking forward to the encounter and how they`ve started to put Australia on the footballing map,

“We need to convince people we are a footballing nation that is getting stronger.”

“Germany are regarded as one of the great nations in world football. They have been highly successful in every tournament they have played in but the battling spirit has always been there with us. We`re in the top 25 teams in the world rankings, and we want to stay there. We`ve got the desire.”

“You`ve got to have confidence in your own ability and we have that. It`s something we`ve never really lacked.”

Can Australia, with Mark between the sticks, get a result tonight?

  • mark will be a steady but do the ozesy have enough strength over all anyway i just knew clinton would have his ten pence worth against england to be fair the westham and portsmouth keepers have not had a great year but joe hart at least had a good year and lampard and gerard never play well together say no more me thinks

  • Aussies were blistered today. Of course, when they lost to the US 3-1 in the warm-up, I knew Germany would be too much for them. As it turned out, way too much.

  • teddy was it that bad? i was at a f1 race and couldn’t watch… why did timmy get sent off?

  • Yep. It could’ve easily been 6-0. Cahill made a stupid tackle, though the straight red was harsh. In the PL, it would’ve been a yellow.
