I always liked Antti Niemi!

The Finnish goalkeeper gave some excellent displays whilst wearing our club colours and but for a horrific freak neck injury, followed b a wrist injury, his Fulham career may have finished in another fashion.

Therefore, on a day where comebacks seem to be all the rage, with Michael Schumacher re-joining Ferrari, it warms the cockles of my heart to see that Antti is being tempted out of retirement by troubled Portsmouth.

Although the keeper has yet to commit to the south-coast club, he admits that he`s flattered by the interest shown by the newly appointed Portsmouth manager, Paul Hart remarking,

‘I have talked with Portsmouth, and there is an interest on both sides. The deal is not done though, that is entirely premature.’

Whilst I`d like nothing better than to see Antti back in football my head tells me that at thirty-seven it`d only be a fleeting revival of his career and that in the cold light of day he`ll probably stick with his original decision to reture.

But I could be wrong!

  • he was stuck defending a goal without much help… i liked him, but schwarzer was undoubtedly an upgrade… i can remember at least 5 highlight reel saves from schwarzer, while what i remember most from niemi is him picking the ball out of the net… however, i would love to see him come back to football… no hard feelings towards him from me…

  • we did a lot of picking the ball out of the net during Sanchez era and the back end of Coleman’s!
