Modern sport continues to evolve.

Down in South Africa, as the United States tem prepare for their opening World Cup 2010 fixture against England, Clint Dempsey has spoken about how the American side have been treated to some motivational talks.

These talks, designed to improve team bonding, have been dished out by some well respected American heroes, as Clint explains,

“We have had some speakers come in and it has been cool. We had one of the pilots from Black Hawk Down (Commander Dan Jollota) come in to speak.”

“And we had Bill Russell (Boston Celtics coach) come in to talk to us.”

“We`ve got to see some documentaries and things that bring the team together.”

“The speakers helped us with team bonding. They brought into reality their experiences about coming together for one team goal. That you have to put egos aside. It`s about the team. Everyone`s on the same page.

I can`t help thinking that managerial speak, from the business world, is fast creeping into the world of sport. Whether it makes a difference or not I`ll leave you to speculate. But personally I`d love to know if any of the American squad participated in a game of b*llsh*t bingo!

  • Motivational talk is all well and good until you get hit. Then, those words are long gone and it’s down to personal resolve whether you get up or not. I always liked the movie quote, ‘Victories for the underdog are an aberration on the order of the universe.’ But, it’s that potential for an upset that is the most compelling thing about sports. Can’t wait until Saturday!

  • if were not on our game we could have a problem on Saturday and the yanks would love to beat us, we’re like the chelski or manure of world football (without the trophies lol), everybody wants to beat england
