It`s been a long, long time since Northern Ireland has graced the finals stage of a international tournament.

All too often the side has fallen short and memories of Gerry Armstrong defeating the Spanish, in Spain, remain one of the few to treasure.

But, this time around there is real optimism in the camp that the Irish could mount a spirited campaign that will result in qualification for the finals of Euro 2012.

Our own Aaron Hughes, as the Irish pensively wait for the second of their two fixtures the international break brings, is quoted in the red-top press this morning as having remarked,

“It`s a tough group, but that doesn`t lower expectations.”

“Whatever anyone thinks outside the camp is irrelevant to what we want to do. If we approach every game properly, we`ll give ourselves as good a chance as ever.”

It may be early days but it`s worth keeping an eye on the Irish jus to see if those expectation levels can be fulfilled!
