With the tabloids dominated by the possibility, well the sports pages mostly, of England qualifying tonight for the World Cup Finals in South Africa next summer, I thought I`d take time out to wish another camp the best of luck.

Tonight, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, featuring our very own Aaron Hughes, face Slovenia in a Group 3 World Cup qualifying fixture.

Victory for Northern Ireland would edge them very close to qualifying for South Africa and bring back those marvelous memories of Spain in 1982 when a certain Gerry Armstrong scored to silence the host nation.

Hughes, expected to skipper the side tonight, has spoken out about what it would mean to emulate the side led by Billy Bingham, ahead of the clash with Slovenia, remarking,

“We`ve had some great results in terms of opposition we`ve been up against, like England and Spain, and taken some big scalps at a time when we`re progressing as a team.”

“But now, in terms of what`s at stake, this game has to be as important as any we`ve played. So we desperately want to win and get ourselves in the best possible position going into our last game against the Czech Republic. That`s what we`re aiming for.”

Well good luck Aaron from all at Vital Fulham.
