Personally I thought the penalty decision awarded against Chris Smalling was a little harsh.

The youngster might have rested an arm over the shoulder of the forward but there wasn`t a great deal of malice involved.

After the fixture, Roy spoke about Chris Smalling and explained how he was always going t be in the limelight once news of his move to Old Trafford became public knowledge, remarking,

“Has he not been signed by United then the criticism would be quite different. But now all eyes are on him.”

“He`ll cope with the pressure of playing at Old Trafford. I`m doing Alex a favour, letting him get his mistakes out of the way at Fulham.”

  • He’s only 20 and will surely improve with age, so I don’t want to be too critical, but his play of late with Fulham and the U-21 squad has had an air of Titus Bramble-esque calamity to it; nothing seems to go right for him. At the time, I thought selling him for 8m was a sound bit of business, but now I’m thinking it may prove to be a brilliant piece of business.

  • it’s interesting, because it seems that the fact that he’s not playing, almost being treated with kid gloves so he doesn’t get hurt, has gotten to his head a bit, and made him less confident… that was a penalty for sure, nothing malicious, so no card was justified, but he got himself into the wrong position, and wrapped his arms around the forward. now i know, since altidore is american, that he went down pretty easily to draw the penalty, but still, smalling put himself in a bad spot. i think once he’s playing normally again, he’ll sort it out… we’ll always take him back once he doesn’t live up to man u’s lofty standards… tim howard much?

  • alex will sort him out dont forget the lad has not had much first team football good luck to him me thinks
