After securing our first away win of the season with holidaymakers contemplating life on an English beach as opposed to the winter sun of Spain, it`s fair to say the season has started well.

That long wait for the domestic season to start now seems worthwhile as we kick on next week with an attractive fixture against Chelsea.

Speaking about the victory on the south coast, Roy Hodgson had this to tell the assembled media in his post match press conference,

“I`m very happy. The opening game of the season is much awaited and you are always concerned that it might not go for you.”

“When it goes well, you have to be delighted. Portsmouth is never an easy place and they have a talented team. So a 1-0 victory is something we are happy with – even if the Bobby Zamora goal was lucky.”

Continuing, and speaking about the scorer himself, Roy remarked,

“There were a few clubs that wanted Zamora. We were competing for Peter Crouch and had he joined it would have made Bobby`s position less tenable, so he was allowed to talk to clubs. Lucky for us he wasn`t too interested.”

And also, as Phil Brown confirmed on Sky Sports this morning, perhaps we should be thankful Bobby couldn`t agree terms with the Humberside outfit.
