Following in the footsteps of Roy Hodgson is going to be a hard task.

Roy took this club of ours to levels we`d not experienced before culminating in our first European Final.

Mark Hughes, aware of what Roy achieved for this club, remarked at his news conference this afternoon,

‘I think the job Roy did was magnificent. He maximised the results out of the group he had. That’s what I’ve always tried to do.”

‘The way I set my team up, I think that will lend itself to the work Roy put in place.’

And as for the season that`s fast approaching, Mark had this to say,

‘We don’t have the distraction of the Europa League.’

‘That’s a big ask when you’re involved in that competition. We had that experience the year before at City.”

‘I think the fact we haven’t got that this year is a bonus. If we can get into the top 10 this year, that’ll be good progress.’

Probably right because events like Hamburg, in May, don`t come along two years on the trot for a club like ours do they!

With regards to his backroom staff, Mark explained that he would, despite rumours to the contrary, be keeping Ray Lewington as part of his backroom staff, explaining,

‘Ray has a really important role to play`.’

No doubt Mark will be using Ray for detailed information on the squad and gaining an insight into what makes who tick.

Exciting times ahead for us we think!

  • He’s saying all the right things. I would like to see a couple of decent signings before the deadline. Cautiously optimistic (today, anyway).

  • true that, teddy… it sounds good, now i’d like it to look good… two weeks away, not much more…

  • Hughes is mature and dignified …. he was at VCity and took his pay off and didn’t start squealing. He should do a good job for you where the expecations are a bit more realistic

  • I’m not sure of what Hughes thought of Mo’s exploits at the conference, sometimes our chairman can be erratic and vindictive
