Little under 24 hours remains until our final 3 o’clock Saturday kick-off of the season, and it came as an opportunity for Kevin Doyle to speak about the prospects of his own club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
While I’m not going to go into detail about what he said, the general context of his interview caught my eye. Anything that catches my eye is worth an article on VitalFulham; surely?
Prior to our sides clash tomorrow, the Irish forward has decided to rally his team mates to pull of what is now literally being described as ‘a Fulham’.
We are, without a doubt now, an established Premier League side. For at least another year we are safe from the drop and I expect us to replicate our ‘safe’ Premier League placement for a few years yet.
Relegation from the still modern Premier League has never been a word a Fulham fan has had to utter truthfully. While we’ve had our fair share of close calls, ever since promotion to the Premiership in 2001, we’ve stayed at the top level.
This coupled with the major success of last season and the unprecedented European trail of this current term, has raised plenty of superlatives from far reaching corners of the footballing world, and Doyle, the Wolves forward, is only adding to that list.
He feels it’s important, once (I say if) they claim their Premier League status for another year, that they build upon that and replicate our stability.
‘Fulham`s ground only holds 25,000 and they don`t spend massive money, so they`ve proved it`s possible to compete at this level.
‘They`re not in the top six or seven this season but they`ve done very well in Europe, they`re safe in mid-table – they may finish above that – and they had a good run in the FA Cup.
‘So if we can stay in the Premier League and establish ourselves, we can look to build like they have since they have come up, nine, 10 years ago.’
So, while Al Fayed may want us to be the ‘Manchester United of the South’, other clubs are using us, rather fondly, as their own benchmark.
