He may have played an instrumental part in Fulham edging out Hamburg in that thrilling semi-final second leg but Simon Davies has far from pleasant memories of that goal.

Whilst, in footballing terms, you could wax lyrical about the finish, Simon, it transpires, was more worried about his personal health. Ahead of the final clash with Atletico Madrid, Simon recalls, in an interview, the exact moment he made a connection with the ball and the immediate aftermath,

“As the ball went in, their keeper caught me on the knee with his stud. I was in agony.”

“It was one of those knocks that goes straight to your stomach and you are really think you are going to throw up. There was no euphoria. All I remember is the pain.”

Ouch! We`ve all been there mate and know exactly what you felt, albeit at various levels of football!

  • well i’m just glad he didn’t shrink away from the moment. he sacrificed his immediate health and put the ball in the net… i was very happy that he didn’t have to come off afterwards…

  • It was certainly not the most exquisite finish I’ve ever seen, but the first two touches were top drawer.
