Fulham – Bye, Bye Clint?

A report in the The Sun suggests that Everton are about to make a £4m bid for American midfielder Clint Dempsey.

Dempsey, who impressed recently in the Confederations Cup, will be out of contract at the end of next season and has reportedly turned down Fulham’s latest contract offer. If the report is to be believed, the Toffees are prepared to offer Dempsey £37,000 a week; £12,000 more than his current Fulham salary.

While it’s not implausible, I find this report hard to believe.

1 I think Dempsey is a good player, but I don’t know that he’s impressed
enough to draw the attention of Everton.

2 If it’s a question of salary, surely Fulham could pony-up £37,000 a week.

3 £4m is low. If Kevin Doyle is worth £6m, surely Dempsey is worth at least the same.

I wouldn’t hold it against Dempsey if he wanted to join a bigger club. I wouldn’t hold it against him if he wanted to make more money. And frankly, I don’t know that Roy Hodgson is Clint’s biggest fan, so there’s no guarantee that he’ll have a spot in the starting eleven next season.

That being said, if we’re prepared to let Dempsey leave, I want to see us splash some cash and land a great replacement.
