Fulham – Biggest Game Ever?

Yet again, I sit here on a Wednesday evening bemoaning the importance of an up-and-coming European fixture set to take place the following night.

And, yet again, I shall bill it as one of the most important games Fulham have ever prepared for.

And, yet again, I shall state the belief I have in the men of Fulham, to go out there and show the world exactly what we’re made of.

As tiring and as repetitive as the articles may be, there can be no doubt in a Fulham fan’s mind of the significance of Thursday 29th April. It’s the night that ‘lowly’ Fulham Football Club may well book a place in a major European Final.

Is it correct, however, claiming this to be the most important match in our 131 year-history?

Now, it goes without saying that Fulham have enjoyed an elaborate day out on a few occasions before, with Portsmouth 2008 springing immediately to mind. However important that match may have been for us Cottagers though, it was still a bitter-sweet victory in that we should never have been in that situation in the first place.

Whilst the win was as sweet-a-win as one could have ever imagined, the fact that we simply had to win to stay in the Premier League shows just how desperate the times were.

That feels all the odder to say when you take dates into account. Only 2 years on and we are battling with the best, and I must needlessly add, beating the best!

Another date that springs to mind, but, unfortunately not to my memory, is that of the FA Cup Final of 1975. Being too young, fresh, energetic, agile, youthful, happy and free to be around at the time, I can only recollect through family stories and the odd wikipedia article splashed across the internet.

A huge game it may have been, yet, it was a huge game that we lost. West Ham beat us on the night, and, statistically, at the time, any gambler would have put money on that result too.

That is where this tie differs I believe. For once I truly have faith in the 11 Fulham players that enter on the pitch. I get the feeling that they really can pull of the needed result and it is clear for all to see that Roy Hodgson has installed a huge sense of belief, not just in the players, but in the club, and more importantly, the fans.

Whilst the game is dubbed purely as a semi-final, I see it as a portal to the biggest match this club has played in a long, long time.

I hope you agree, and join me in supporting the lads tomorrow night.

Come on you Whites!
