It goes against the grain as far as I`m concerned!

Players should be dragged kicking and screaming away from the international scene, playing for your country should be the ultimate goal but apparently not in the modern game.

It transpires that Zoltan Gera, after 63 caps for Hungary has decided that he`d rather not play for his country again although, if you read the transcript of his interview he does somewhat contradict himself later on.

With Gera not being in the squad recently and with Hungary finishing a poor fourth in their World Cup qualification group and not qualifying for South Africa 2010, Gera has remarked,

‘I told Erwin Koeman that I don’t consider myself as a member of the squad anymore.”

‘I’m ready to face the consequences. My close friends know that this is not a headstrong decision from me.”

‘In the past months I felt it several times that the national coach doesn’t really believe in me and there were many things that were undeserving with me.”

‘I did my best and I accepted when my captain belt was taken away from me and I had to sit on the bench. I tried to prove my abilities with extra resolve.”

‘The coach told me on Wednesday that I wouldn’t play against Denmark (not even from the bench). This time I decided to tell him my decision and added that I don’t want to bother the team in the evening with my presence.”

‘I don’t say that the decision will last until the end of my career because it can happen in the far future that my name will be in the national team again – but it can also happen that I’ll never play again.’

Like I said earlier, it goes against the grain as far as I’m concerned Zoltan!

  • This happens all the time with players feeling they’ve been slighted by the national team manager and withdrawing from international competition. I would say he’d likely return for a new manager, but at his age, there’s not much time left in his international career, anyway.

  • players today quit there country to get 2 or 3 more years in the top leage ie paul scoles and even ryan gigs
