Fulham`s hopes of a decent run in the FA Cup were ended at the third-round stage when they bowed out of the competition at the hands of the Premier League side Southampton.

Ahead of the cup-tie there were hopes that Fulham could pull off an FA Cup shock against a side that had gone nine-games without a win.

But it wasn`t to be.

With both sides fielding strong starting elevens, the only goal of the contest came just before the half-hour mark when James Ward-Prowse latched on to a ball that had rebounded off of Kevin McDonald to beat David Button, in the Fulham goal.

Other chances in what was an entertaining game saw Southampton`s Jack Stephens head against the bar whilst Fulham, who rallied well after going a goal down, saw efforts from Lucas Piazon, making his first start since recovering from a broken leg sustained back in August, and Denis Odoi both went close.

Late-on, with the game opening up, both sides missed chances to score, Oliver Norwood placed a header wide when in a good position whilst Manalo Gabbiadini, with a chance to make the game safe, placed his shot over the bar when one-on-one with Button.

With no cup football to pre-occupy their minds, Fulham can now concentrate on a late surge to make the Championship play-offs.
