A couple of weeks ago the ‘Daily Grapevine` implied that we were interested in three strikers.

The names doing the rounds were Eidur Gudjohnsen, Obafemi Martins and Kevin Doyle.

Out of the three, when it was put to a poll, it was Kevin Doyle who fared worse.

The Reading striker has, though, since been the subject of a multi-million pound transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But this transfer hasn`t gone down too well with the ex-Republic of Ireland player and renowned author, Eammon Dunphy who has suggested Doyle would have been better picking one of the other clubs chasing him, when he remarks,

“I feel that Doyle is a top-class striker and he has been Ireland’s best player under Giovanni Trapattoni.”

‘But I do feel that he has made a massive blunder by joining Wolves. He should have asked himself this question: if I was good enough to spark Chelsea’s interest 18 months ago, should I now settle for Wolves? “

‘It’s not as if no other Premier League clubs were interested in signing him.”
‘Any one of those clubs would have been a far better destination for Doyle. Fulham, Everton and Villa are clubs on the rise and all of them will be playing in the Europa League next season. And, crucially, all of them have hugely impressive managers who could have helped develop Doyle as a player.”

Harsh words indeed but probably true!
