Chris Coleman has admitted for the first time today that he is feeling the pressure of Fulham’s struggle for form.
He is seeing the ugly side to bad luck this season and it is beginning to take its toll on the Cottagers manager.
For the first time he has given a true insight into what being a manager has done to him.
‘People who know me well say I have changed’, he told the Daily Star.
‘I suppose I had to, he continued. ‘When I started three years ago I was fresh out of the changing room. I was still the captain. A million miles away from the manager I am today.’
Fulham have not won away from home this season in the Premiership and have picked up only three points from a possible 48 in the process.
But Coleman has made it clear he is going nowhere.
‘Not once has my Chairman said to me I have a couple of matches to get it right.’
So it would appear at present that the speculated pressure on Coleman is not as high as it has been reported. However, with the daunting visit of Chelsea looming on Sunday, Coleman’s men could find themselves in a position of having lost five league games in a row.
If that happens, no doubt, the pressure will pile back on chairman Mohammad Al-Fayed to take urgent action to ensure Fulham’s Premiership survival this season.
But Coleman sees things a bit differently!
‘He likes to please people and he wants to please the Fulham fans’, he said.
‘We play good, attacking football and I have lost count of the chances we have missed or the late goals conceded.
Many fans have suggested it is possibly due to Coleman’s attacking philosophy away from home that is costing his side points, instead of keeping it tight and grinding out the results.
But Coleman is adamant things are being done right and that he is being fully backed by Fayed.
‘The chairman is realistic and so am I,’ Coleman stated.
‘People who don’t know anything about Fulham are pointing the finger and saying I could be under pressure.
‘It doesn’t worry me. I know I am a better manager than when i started regardless of results.’
