Fulham are willing to pay compensation to Alexei Smertin to release the Russian midfield player from the last year of his contract.

The ex-Chelsea star who has 52 Russian caps to his name and has also captained his country, has been deemed surplus requirements under new boss Roy Hodgson, and has not appeared in a Fulham shirt since the Sanchez era.

There were also talks of the midfielder leaving in January and returning to his home country, but any sort of move failed to materialise.

Although he’s only experienced a short stint at Fulham, like he did at Portsmouth and Charlton, he did not fail to leave his mark with his good performances and hard work, and also got two good strikes, albeit deflected, to his name early in the season, which helped to earn Fulham some what ended up being valuable points.

I for one would like to thank Smertin for his contribution to the Fulham FC squad and wish him luck for the future. Please leave your opinions!
