Looking at the carnage that was our FA Cup dream, I cannot but help that wish we`d put up more of a fight.

Being rolled over 4-0 by Spurs, a team who usually struggle away from home; has probably done nothing but highlight the simple fact that the remaining few months of the season could be a turgid slog for survival.

Now I`m not advocating a physical injection along the lines of a Bellamy / Riise confrontation but, on Sunday, the commitment certainly left a lot to be desired. In a way I felt like we stepped out of the way whilst a big brother from N17 eased us aside with comparative ease.

The FA Cup should have been our salvation in a season that has seen our hopes of progressing in the Premiership once again we now find our hopes of a cup success floating like discarded flotsam in the River Thames.

In the cruel light of day I can recall any hopes I had left of Fulham perhaps making a decent game of it evaporate when Collins John just failed to keep his shot below the bar. Instead, I was left to survey the wreckage of our season caused by the aerial power of Mido and the deadly finishing of Keane.

Two late goals from Berbatov only served to pour salt into wounds that were festering long before the final twist of the dagger from the triumphant visitors killed us off for this season. Today, almost twenty four hours later, the pain is still there. The hurt at realising all that is left is a struggle to retain our Premiership status nags at me like a persistent headache.

I wonder why I continue to put myself through this but then the realisation hits me that it`s an addiction, something so powerful I need my regular fix. The pain is all part of the process, part of the ups and downs of life as a football supporter. Perhaps I should console myself that the sweet scent of victory far outweighs the occasional spell of pain, perhaps I should look forward to the next game providing a little pain relief.

Who is it we play again?

Manchester United -arrgghhh
